 Roman Numerals

As an individual involved in medical science you'll be exposed to roman numerals. Let's take a few moments to review the rules:

I = 1

V = 5

X = 10

L = 50

C = 100

D = 500

M = 1000

  • Repeating a numeral up to three times represents the addition of the number. For example, III represents 1 + 1 + 1 = 3. Only I, X, C, and M can be repeated
  • Can NOT be repeated- V, L, and D
  • Writing numerals that decrease from left to right represents the addition of the numbers. For example, LX represents 50 + 10 = 60 and XVI represents 10 + 5 + 1 = 16.
  • Writing a smaller numeral to the left of a larger numeral represents subtraction. For example, IV represents 5 - 1 = 4 and IX represents 10 - 1 = 9.

Practice

Please write the following in roman numerals:

Celsius to Fahrenheit

We will need to be able to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit

You can use this short cut conversion

5F = 9C + 160

temp.

9:1 Disinfecting Solution

9:1 means - 9 parts to 1 part

     example- 9 ml water to 1 ml bleach

Terms

solvent, solute, solution

Solvent is usually the larger amount that the solute is dissolved into.

The solute is normally the smaller amount the is dissolved into the solvent

The solution is the combination of solvent and solute.

9:1 means: 9 parts of solvent, 1 part of solute for a total solution of 10 parts

Example

9:1 Bleach solution for disinfecting

Measure 9ml of water to the water add 1ml of bleach....the solution is a 9:1 solution

% is solute/solution times 100

9ml water and 1 ml bleach = 10 ml solution

solute = 1ml

solvent = 10ml

1/10 * 100 = 10%

Military Time 2400 Clock

The reason most healthcare facilities convert from standard time to military time is that military time removes the need to determine AM or PM and eliminates 12:00 midnight from 12:00 noon.

Please review the following:

Please develop and submit a presentation demonstrating your understanding of military time.

The United States military normally uses the "dd mmm yyyy" format for correspondence.
